Methodology

Repocharts queries the public APIs of GitHub, GitLab and Codeberg once a day and ranks repositories by their number of stars. Each chart has up to 50 places.

The charts differ in what they include. The Hot 50 covers the most-starred repositories overall. AI, Dev Tools and Apps are based on the topics maintainers give their repositories. Rising only includes repositories created in the last 30 days. Language rankings list the most-starred GitHub repositories per primary language. Repositories with adult content are excluded.

Every daily snapshot is stored. From these we calculate the previous position, the best position (peak), days on chart, days at the current position, stars gained since the day before and star growth over the last seven days. Average stars per day is the total divided by the repository's age. Similar repositories are matched by shared topics, language and chart membership.

Ads and sponsorships are reviewed by hand, always labelled and never influence the rankings.
